In 1999, Robert J. Membreno, founder and director of Marina Puesta del Sol, decided to take some time off from his engineering company in California, and went sailing. Taking his Kelly Peterson 46 ("Puesta del Sol") south to Central America, and through the Panama Canal, he turned north, and cruised the east coast of Central America, winding up in Florida. After trucking his boat back to California, he started another adventure south. During his first trip, he managed to direct the engineering and construction of a 65 megawatt geothermal plant in El Salvador.
During his second trip, his firm looked to Nicaragua to build another geothermal power plant. While looking for a place to berth his boat and enjoy sailing in Central America in his spare time, he discovered no marinas existed in the country. The seed was planted...after a comprehensive search of the Pacific Nicaraguan coastline, he finally found a natural setting for a marina, with a deep channel and serene lagoon. With genuine support from local and national government as well as the local community, he proceeded forward with the project.
By December of 2001, he had all the requisite permits and government licenses to start construction of the marina. The power plant is now on the "back burner" as the Marina Puesta del Sol resort, through his full-time dedication, has become a reality. Robert believes he finally has his priorities in order...

What our friends have to say...
"Robert is going all out, so this will probably become a major stop for cruisers. The location is only 90 miles from Marina Barilles in El Salvador and Puesta del Sol has some real advantages - an easy deep-water entrance, total protection and it is cooler because of the breeze.” John Haste Little Wing, Perry 52 Catamaran
"Well this marina is a gem. The entrance had red and green flashing lights, no surfing in either, just a breakwater and calm well marked channels. We are impressed with the quality of workmanship, and with the owner Robert. Robert is building a school and all the children and employees want to learn English." Linda Wheeler Jubilee
"We just spent two weeks at the newly completed Puesta del Sol Resort & Marina in Nicaragua and had a great time. When it's finished, it's going to be a one-of-a-kind first class resort and marina in Nicaragua with hotel, pool, restaurant, slips and moorings. The entrance to the estuary from the ocean is well marked with a large red/white striped buoy, and it's safe to get in and out." Howard Biolos Nintai m. a.
