Marina Puesta del Sol Resort

On the North Pacific coast of Nicaragua...

Recreational Activities

Marina Puesta del Sol offers a wide variety of recreational activities to keep you occupied and energized. Take a leisurely horseback ride on the beach, find that elusive, hot surf spot written about in Surfer Magazine, play a set of tennis on our professional courts and cool off with a swim in the warm Pacific surf.

Guided boat tours are available for the sightseer interested in exploring the intense flora and fauna of the mangrove lined tributaries feeding the lagoon. Be adventurous and take one of our 2-seater, sit-on-top kayaks for a paddling excursion in the lagoon. Early morning is especially nice as the sun rises behind majestic San Cristobal volcano and the mirror-like waters reflect the vibrant colors of the sky.

Fully outfitted boats are ready to take you fishing either in the lagoon or out to sea for a try at dorado, wahoo, or sailfish (catch and release only). We recently hosted an international fishing tournament which was a big success, and are planning on more for the future.

A little closer to "home", we offer casual relaxation activities such as table tennis and "fusball" in Tennis Club palapa. For our golf afficianados, we will soon be opening a driving range/putting green facility to help you keep that stroke fine tuned!

Sport Fishing

This year, Marina Puesta del Sol will again be home to the Fifth Annual International "Flor de Caña" Fishing Tournament! The waters off the Pacific coast of Nicaragua are becoming more and more popular with anglers the world over. A wide variety of fish including rooster fish, sierra mackeral, jack crevalle, bonito, hound fish, snapper and grouper can be found in inshore waters. Offshore roam black, blue and striped Marlin, sailfish, yellowfin, wahoo, and dorado. Winds tend to be lighter here on the north coast of the country than in the south. Consequently, the fishing season lasts longer with the attendant warmer water. Good fishing can be found in the estuary and there are a few reefs located within 5 miles of the marina with good shore structure. Offshore fishing will take you out 30 plus miles to get to the humps and drops.

Surfing

Discover surfing on the North Pacific Coast of Nicaragua before it’s "really" discovered.  Leave the crowds behind and surf from the Marina Puesta del Sol private beach or panga to a great left point break just across the estuary or to several other hot spots nearby.
Surf season is from March to October in this area.  Off shore winds are the dominant pattern here.  Average waves are 4-6 feet and frequently will be much larger.

The left point is rippable on a short or long board and can hold up to 15 feet or more.  The beach break is similar to Pasqualles or Puerto Escondido Mexico and requires a short gunnier board.  The beach break is hollow and fast!  There are numerous other undiscovered reefs and points all within a panga or car ride away.  If you want to escape the crowds in South Nicaragua or Costa Rica, this is the place!

We’re not surfers ourselves here at Marina Puesta del Sol, so why are we promoting surfing? Frankly,  we have listened to the many cruisers who have stayed here and are also avid surfers.  Their enthusiasm has convinced us to get the word out. Here’s what some have had to say:

Caston: “This is an incredible spot and the word is getting out.  They will be coming whether or not you do anything. We’re not surfing today because the conditions have been so good for the last fifteen days that we are just worn out.”

Ted:  “All the talk in Southern California is about the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua.  You will see greatly increased interest in this area in the coming years.”

Gary:  “The left point break at the entrance to the marina is great.  Also, the left and right hollow beach break near the other point is very good.  South and north of these two are other equally good spots.  Also just around the left point break is a nice easy beginner’s beach break.”

Kayaking

Two rivers feed the large lagoon of Aserradores which is joined to the ocean by a deep estuary. Exploring the mangrove lined lagoon by kayak is a truly unique experience. Flora and fauna abound in this primordial environment. Six "Mainstream" tandem (two-person) sit-on-top kayaks are available for our paddling guests. They are designed to be used by beginners through advanced kayakers and are stable and easy to maneuver. Each kayak features molded-in padded seats with high adjustable back supports. The roto-molded polyethylene kayaks are 12 feet long with a 34" boat beam. And where would you be without a paddle? We use lightweight aluminum shaft paddles with comfortable plastic coated grips.
